Nokia Series 40 will have touch screens, QWERTY and two SIM-cards

Nokia has big plans for all three of its platforms. Despite the huge growth of affordable smartphones, the S40 platform will go on, getting touchscreens, dual-SIM and QWERTY keyboards, while Symbian and Maemo will get new interfaces with improved speed and multi-touch.

Nokia sees Maemo taking up a big portion of the number of devices sold by 2011, compared to the current niche status of the platform. When Maemo 6 hits it will bring along multi-touch support as well. Both Maemo and Symbian will get new interfaces in 2010 - Symbian^1 should be out in the first half of 2010 and Symbian^2 by the end of 2010.

As for Series 40, there have been attempts to make an S40 handset with a QWERTY keyboard but that didn't catch on. Touchscreens and dual-SIM phones is breaking new ground for Series 40.

These new and improved S40 devices will begin appearing in 2010 along with the new Symbian and Maemo devices. Nokia maintains that Symbian is their smartphone platform of choice, keeping Maemo to high-end "mobile computers". S40 is here to stay as well according to Nokia's strategy - multiple platforms to cover all the market segments for mobile phones, instead of stretching one platform from the low end to the high end.

Nokia Requests International Trade Commission to begin an investigation into the violation of patent law by Appl

The company Nokia today announced that has filed a complaint with the Commission on International Trade in the U.S. alleging a violation of the Apple patent rights, almost all of its mobile phones, portable music players and computers.

Seven patents, Nokia, referred to in the complaint relate to innovative introductions Nokia, which Apple uses to create allegedly key roles in their products that affect the user interface, camera, antenna and power management. The company notes that these patented technologies are critical to its success, since they provide a better user interaction, lower production costs, as well as pozvolildi reduce the size and increase the duration of the batteries in the products of Nokia

It’s Droid, Droid, Baby

A month ago, I reported that Motorola and Verizon were on track to sell a million Droids in the fourth quarter of 2009. Not only are they closer to that milestone, but it seems Droid is also the most dominant Android phone on the market today.

Even though the overall Android app market grew 20 percent month-over-month in December 2009, Droid logged the biggest gains, indicating a higher number of Droids in the market than competing Android devices, new data from Flurry Media, a San Francisco-based mobile analytics company, shows:

* Droid application downloads increased by 93 percent over previous Fridays in December.
* Droid accounted for 48 percent of download volume across the leading Android handsets (Droid, myTouch 3G, G1 and HTC Hero).

In October, HTC Dream was the best-selling Android smartphone, a position it retained during November, but things have started to change. When Droid was released in November, some analysts expected Motorola to sell about 600,000 units during the fourth quarter, but those estimates were quickly revised thanks to a $100 million marketing push by both Motorola and Verizon. In December, it seems Droid has taken a very strong lead among its Android brethren.

A smart Adam to chart new territory

Two years after their ‘Eureka moment,’ a bunch of IIT graduates are set to announce the country’s foray into the Complete Product Development market, a territory hitherto uncharted by any Indian company.

Among the new fangled technologies to be displayed at the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show scheduled for January 2010 will be a sleek gizmo, tentatively named Adam, conceptualised and designed in Hyderabad and Bangalore.

So, what exactly is Adam? To quote one of its creators: “It is a ‘smartpad,’ small enough to be carried anywhere and big enough to do anything.”

It is a brainchild of Notion Ink, a Hyderabad start-up launched by seven Indians (six IITians and an MBA graduate), who left lucrative careers to realise their dream of designing a next-gen device at an affordable price. And if the 67 patents filed for the product in various categories are any indication, they have come a long way.

Weighing 770 grams, the 0.6-inch-thick, 10.1-inch scratch-resistant touch screen device comes loaded with features that are likely to impress Eve.

The device will be among the first to feature Pixel Qi display, a low-cost, power-saving screen that can operate in three modes. Besides the LCD mode, it can run in a low-power, basic colour trans-reflective mode and a very low-power, sunlight-readable e-paper mode that mounts no pressure on the eye. The screen comes with fingerprint-resistant oleophobic (oil repelling) and anti-glare coating.

“We are the only ones to use Pixel Qi screens for Tablet technology. It consumes one-tenth of the battery compared with conventional LCDs,” reveals Rohan Shravan, founder, and director, Creatives, Notion Ink.

The company reckons that the integral Lithium-ion battery will hold good up to 48 hours standby, eight hours of high definition video playback or 16 hours of Internet surfing over WiFi. At its heart will be NVIDIA’s powerful, yet energy-saving, eight-core Tegra system-on-chip, which will drive the system at astonishing speeds while ensuring battery longevity.

“We collaborated with the best in the industry to provide days of computing,” says Sachin Ralhan, another co-founder.

The device will almost be entirely manufactured in Taiwan. TPK Touch Solutions (Xiamen) Inc. has been roped in for touch screens, and talks are on with major Original Device Manufacturers (ODMs) for the final product.

Squeezed into Adam are water, ambient light and proximity sensors, accelerometer, assisted GPS, digital compass, built-in speakers and microphone. However, it will be loaded only with Flash memory (16 or 32 GB) augmented by Secure Digital (SD) card support.

It will have three interfaces: the touch screen, an on-screen virtual keyboard and a track pad located behind the screen, allowing users to manoeuvre the cursor from the front or the rear. A rotatable three megapixel camera at the top can effortlessly take pictures or videos within a 180 degree angle.

The developers were assisted by the National Institute of Design (Research and Development campus, Bangalore) in elements of next generation operating system (OS), user interfaces, usability issues and product concepts. For starters, Adam will support gesture control, thanks to the Android user interface. “We wanted to adopt an OS which would make our device ‘talk’ to any other device. And we chose Google’s Android,” says Rohit Rathi, another co-founder.

But, originally designed for mobile phones, Android’s interface would appear stretched on the smartpad’s screen, and this issue will have to be resolved.

Notion Ink is talking to telecom providers (in India and the U.S.) to test the device for connectivity issues on delivery of the first batch of 60 Adams.

The best part: price. Notion Ink promises it will be Rs.15,000 when it is out in the U.S., European and Indian markets in June next year.

2010 Arash AF10

Arash AF-10 is a sleek 7-litre engine that produces a power output of approximately 550 brake horsepower, and can roar at the top speed of 330 kilometers per hour or 205 miles per hour, and can accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 3.4 seconds. Arash Motor Company was born out of a passion for cars, the allure of beauty and the thrill of driving the seemingly endless acceleration of a thoroughbred engine. The engine, or better still, the soul of the AF10 is designed to withstand the punishment of motor racing and we’re sure it will excite even the most accomplished of drivers.

New Honda Beat: Next-Generation Kei Roadster Speculated

Remember the original Beat, Honda's pint-sized, two-seater roadster with the mid-engine, rear-wheel drive layout of the 1990s? Well, Japan's Best Car magazine is doing what it does best by speculating on the return of the Beat in Honda's car range.

Our knowledge of the Japanese language is non-existent so we can't share any details from the article (any help would be hugely appreciated) but we assume from the side air-vents that the design proposal is for a rear-engined roadster - something like the poor man's Porsche.

We don't know if the rendering / story is based on actual inside information or pure speculation, but it would be interesting to hear your say about whether or not a model like this could be successful in markets outside Japan in today's world of downsizing and greener cars.

BS of the Day: GM Planning to Rebadge the 2010 SAAB 9-5 as a Buick in the USA

The folks over at Saabsunited were quick to pick up an article from Swedish business daily Dagen Industri claiming that, according to an unnamed inside source, GM will re-badge the 2010 SAAB 9-5 sedan as a Buick in the USA and use some of the tech on a future flagship Opel sedan in Europe. The author of the fable story, Ian Wadenal, goes on to tell us how well the 9-5 would fit in Buick's range, sitting atop the new 2011 Regal a.k.a. the U.S-spec Opel Insignia.

You'll probably read the same story elsewhere, and if you're a car guy, you'll shake your head with stupefaction because Buick already has a similar-sized model in the States, the new LaCrosse that shares the same Epsilon II platform and possibly other hardware with the 9-5.

A more compact version of the Epsilon II is also used on the Opel Insignia - Buick Regal.

We're not saying that there's no place for a re-badged Saab 9-5 in GM's global portfolio, but we can't see it being done for Buick in the States (obvious why) nor for Cadillac and Opel (at least in their core markets) simply because both of these brands have spent money and time to create their own design language.

We're all in for saving SAAB and we respect the efforts of enthusiasts, but if anything else, some common sense is necessary when re-telling / reporting stories...

2010 Arash AF10

Naming your high performance, heart-filled, passion encompassing sports car company after something that is red, causes frustration and makes a person undeniably itchy is not exactly what you'd call a trophy name. Neither is the fact that when said out loud, gives the impression to those around you that you have a serious lisp.

Despite all this, the new British sports car company "Arash" has been hammering away on a car called the Arash AF10.

While Arash was established in 2006, nothing has come of the manufacturer. That is until now.

It's called the 2010 Arash AF10 and it's as technologically advanced as every other gun-ho supercar out there; carbon chassis, a mixture of carbon and aluminium doors, ideal weight distribution for superb balance and it's somewhat safe.

Like all freshmen supercars popping up over the past decade or so, the 2010 Arash AF10 comes with a raft of features, which are seemingly more impressive than those found on the current landmark supercars.

For one, it features rarely seen, monstrous eight-piston brake calipers on the front (380mm brake disc) coupled to six-piston calipers on the rear (362mm brake disc), so it will easily make your neck resemble a giraffe's after a few high-speed stops—were sure of it.

Furthermore, it's got a good soul—albeit a heavy American one. The Arash AF10 nurses a 7.0-litre V8 engine, galloping out 550bhp (410kw) and a nearly-identical 555Nm of torque—impressive considering the Arash AF10 should be very, very light.

With all the new, whiter and brighter supercars sprouting up like poisonous weeds in a widower’s forgotten garden, will the heavyweights of the supercar world—Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini and so on—start feeling the heat from the flood of new metal from these no–name supercar brands?

Well, No. Despite how crowded it gets, the supercars legends will always return the victor as people seek brands they can trust—brands with, history, ongoing potential, reputation so cemented that not even a poor car released can detract eager customers. More importantly, who's to say these manufactures will be here in a decade’s time?

2011 Ford Mustang GT

The Mustang is not just an iconic pony car or a retro-modern throw-back to simpler times. It's a fan-favorite performance vehicle that has a rabid and enthusiastic base of drivers, tuners and manufacturers behind it. So news of the return of the '5.0' badge to the front fender of the 2011 Ford Mustang is likely to be met with a roar of approval to most muscle car fans, old and new.

Earlier this month at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show, Ford unveiled its 2011 Mustang, but only the base V-6 model, which itself has been upgraded with a new 3.7-liter mill churning out 305 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque.

At next month’s 2010 Detroit Auto Show, however, the Blue Oval will pull the wraps off the new V-8 powered GT, which will pack a 5.0-liter V-8 with 412 horsepower and 390 pounds-feet of torque on tap--just 14 horsepower shy of the output of the Chevrolet Camaro SS. Furthermore, fuel economy is claimed to be as high as 25 mpg on the highway and 17 mpg in the city for the 6-speed automatic, while the 6-speed manual should return 24 mpg on the highway and 16 mpg in the city.

Key elements of the new 5.0-liter mill is Ford’s Ti-VCT cam-torque-actuated variable camshaft timing system and all-aluminum four-valve-per-cylinder engine design, plus specially designed tubular exhaust headers.

Other changes for the 2011 Ford Mustang GT include specially tuned electric power steering, 11.5-inch front and 11.8-inch rear vented disc brakes, and an enhanced suspension featuring an improved rear lower control arm and stiffened rear stabilizer bushings

For the more hardcore enthusiast, a Brembo brake package with larger rotors and calipers from the Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang, unique 19-inch wheels and summer performance tires will also be offered.

In the handling department, Ford engineers have added an enhanced rear lower control arm to add stiffness and improve powertrain harshness control while also sharpening the handling. A stiffened rear stabilizer bar for better on-center steering is also included.

2010 Ford Mustang Boss 302R

Along with the 5.0-liter V-8, Ford is resurrecting the legendary Boss 302 with a new track-ready Mustang that will be sold at dealerships. The Ford Mustang Boss 302R will feature a roll cage, race seats, safety harness, data acquisition, race suspension, Brembo brakes, and special tires, ready for racing in Grand-Am, SCCA, and NASA series. The Boss 302R will not be street legal. Power will come from the 5.0-liter V-8 paired with a six-speed manual. The return of the Boss recognizes the fortieth anniversary of Parnelli Jones' 1970 Trans-Am championship in a Boss 302.

To purchase a 302R, customers will technically have to place their order through their dealer's parts department, as the vehicle is considered a racing part. Ford will only sell 50 Boss 302Rs, with MSRP starting at $79,000. Deliveries are expected in the fall of 2010.

A special package, known as the 302R1, preps the Boss for competition in the Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge series. Ford currently plans to deliver five of the Grand-Am cars at a price of $129,900 for the season's start on January 29, 2010 in Daytona, Florida. The 302R1 features a sealed, high-output race engine, upgraded cooling system, close-ration transmission with integral shifter, a seam-welded body, Koni dampers, ABS brake tuning, race exhaust, and one-piece driveshaft.

Wired’s 20 Favorite iPhone Apps of 2009

2009 was the “year of the app,” especially for the iPhone, whose App Store is overflowing with more than 100,000 offerings. While it’s easy to make fun of the more ridiculous apps, some truly stellar wares stood out from that massive pile, and we’re taking the time to honor them.

We recently published Wired readers’ favorite iPhone apps of 2009, as well as Apple’s top picks. Now it’s our turn. The Wired staff has chosen its 20 favorite apps, broken into separate categories: productivity, games, hobbies, and travel and outdoors. These are apps we deemed exceptional either for their innovation, elegant design, usefulness or a combination of all these qualities.

Productivity

BeeJiveIM
We’ve been using instant messaging for years, but BeeJiveIM is the most feature-rich, well-designed app we’ve seen that crams this communication method into our pockets. The app supports several IM services (such as Google chat, AIM and Yahoo! Messenger), as well as chat-room functionality and the ability to upload videos and photos. Plus, it’s got push support, so IMs can pop up on your iPhone, just like text messages, the instant you receive them. It’s a fancy app worth the $10 (on sale for $7 until Jan. 1, 2010). Download BeeJiveIM.

Dropbox
Who doesn’t like Dropbox? The service allows you to store and share your computer’s files online through a “dropbox” folder, and this new iPhone app allows you to access your Dropbox anywhere you go. On the iPhone, Dropbox really comes in handy for listening to your friends’ shared music or viewing their videos and photos. The Dropbox service is free for 2 GB of storage per month. It costs $10 per month for 50 GB and $20 per month for 100 GB. The iPhone app is free. Download Dropbox.

Instapaper
We’re gaga for Instapaper here at Wired. The app is perfect for tech-savvy newshounds constantly on the run — i.e., us. After downloading the app, you add a “Read Later” button to your web browser toolbar. Whenever you see a webpage with contents you want to save to read on your iPhone, you click the Read Later button. Launch Instapaper et voila — it’s there. Very useful not just for saving web articles, but also recipes, map directions, airplane itineraries and so on. The app is $5; there’s also a light version you can get for free. Download Instapaper.

Tweetie 2
We’ve been raving about this app for months, and with good reason: Tweetie 2 is probably the most loved app in the App Store. Its beautiful interface and rich feature set make using Twitter a blast. It’s a must-have for any Twitter user with an iPhone. Tweetie 2 is $3. Download Tweetie 2.

Strapped to Android, HTC Takes a Dizzying Ride to the Top

Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC is on a tear. This year alone, the company has released five Android handsets. Its next phone, the HTC Nexus One, aka the Googlephone, is among the most anticipated devices of 2010.

Just about a decade old, HTC looks like it is poised to pull ahead of much older and larger rivals such as Samsung and LG in worldwide phone market share. While the older companies’ strength lies in now-declining “feature phones,” or inexpensive, less-capable handsets, HTC’s bet on the booming smartphone business is giving it a major boost. It has also acquired a powerful godfather in Google, the Goliath whose attention is now captivated by the mobile phone business and whose chosen partner is HTC.

“We have covered a distance in the last three years that many other companies haven’t in ten,” says John Wang, chief marketing officer for HTC.

About one in six smartphones in the United States in 2008 was a HTC phone, according to Nielsen Mobile. And with a slew of new handsets and a clever bet on Android, HTC is now the fourth biggest smartphone maker, after Nokia, Research In Motion and Apple. HTC’s Android portfolio now includes the original G1 and MyTouch on T-Mobile, the Hero on Sprint, and the Tattoo and Droid Eris on Verizon. And while Nokia is struggling to get a grip on the U.S. market, HTC is gaining ground.

“HTC got into bed very, very early with Google and that has helped them,” says Avi Greengart, research director for mobile devices at Current Analysis.

HTC has risen to prominence rapidly because it is young, ambitious and unencumbered by the legacy technology and old business that slow down its peers. Founded in 1997, HTC has always focused on designing and manufacturing smartphones — multifunctional devices with powerful processors — rather than inexpensive flip phones.

Its first product in 2000 was the the Compaq iPaq, a PDA that ran Microsoft’s Windows CE operating system. PDAs were a hot product then, but HTC CEO Peter Chou realized mobile phones would be a bigger market. Chou started courting telecom operators in Europe with an offer to create customized handsets for them. By 2002, HTC had two phones out, for O2 in the UK and Orange in France. Soon HTC was cranking out handsets for T-Mobile and other European carriers.

Google Applications May Reach 150,000 in 2010 Amid Apple Chase

Google Inc.’s Android mobile software may offer as many as 150,000 applications by the end of 2010, as the company chases Apple Inc. for downloads, according to a mobile-application research firm.

“A lot of developers have come onto the Android platform” because of efforts by Verizon Wireless, Motorola Inc. and Google to promote the system, Flurry Inc. Chief Executive Officer Simon Khalaf said today in an interview. Flurry, based in San Francisco, is a firm that studies applications and their use.

Android currently offers more than 12,000 programs. More than 100,000 are available on Apple’s site for its iPhone and iPod Touch devices. The company may have at least 300,000 applications by the end of next year, Khalaf said. Google will have 100,000 to 150,000, he said.

Motorola, which is rebuilding its phone business around Google’s software, is one of several handset makers that may release more Android devices in 2010. Google, owner of the world’s most popular Internet search engine, disclosed that it was working on a phone in a blog posting on Dec. 12, saying that employees were using the device to provide feedback. Android is free to anyone who wants to develop applications for it.

Apple sold 7.4 million iPhones and 10.2 million iPods last quarter. More than 125,000 software designers are registered to create programs for the devices, Apple said in September.

Google’s press office in Mountain View, California, didn’t immediately respond to an e-mail and telephone call. Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller declined to comment beyond a Nov. 4 company statement.

Google rose $10.56 to $611.68 at 4 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. Apple, based in Cupertino, California, gained $1.74 to $202.10. Schaumburg, Illinois-based Motorola fell 17 cents to $7.93 in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. Verizon Wireless sells Motorola’s Droid phone in the U.S.

Squibble Portable Braille Interface Allows Visually Impaired and Blind People Accessing Their Mobile Phone Easily

While modern gadgets have revolutionized the lifestyles of contemporary users, technology still remains a bane for the visually impaired. Raising a ray of hope, British designer Andrew Mitchell has devised a portable Braille interface called “Squibble” that provides tactile, audio and high contrast visual feedback for the blind, allowing users to access their mobile phones and other technology anytime, anywhere. Regardless of where it is used, the Squibble gives the chance for personal interaction as well as freedom, as it neatly fits into a pocket and connects via Bluetooth. Moreover, it tries to negate the stigma of assisted products and provides a stylish and desirable solution for a market segment that is often neglected.

Call us crazy, but we don’t think you’d host a “Mobile Launch Party” at CES unless you were planning.. you know, a mobile launch of some sort – and when it comes to mobile launches, companies generally don’t co-host parties unless they’re launching a phone together.

So when we get a heads up letting us know that Sprint and LG will be throwing a party at CES, it’s a pretty clear sign that somethings up. While we can’t be 100% sure what they’re launching, we can make some pretty well educated guesses.

What it might be, but probably isn’t: LG and Sprint are pitching the party under the tagline of “Celebrate Style”. When it comes to LG phones, it doesn’t get much more stylish than their Prada line. Fortunately for us, they’ve already confirmed a Prada III is in the works. Celebrities, lavish parties, style – it all just fits together too well.

Alas, the fact that Sprint is involved makes it significantly less likely. If Sprint were to carry the Prada phone, it’d be the first time any of the Prada line appeared in CDMA form — not to mention it’d be the first time a Prada phone appeared on a US carrier, period.

What it might be, and probably is: The LG Lotus 2. We scooped all the details on the LG Lotus 2 back in October. Launching in January? Check. Heading for Sprint? Yep. Whether or not you think the original Lotus was all that stylish, Sprint certainly does; right out of the first line of the original press release:

Fans of the fashion runways will appreciate the couture style of LG Lotus, exclusive to Sprint.

So there you have it, folks. Until further evidence arises, consider our bets hedged on Sprint/LG launching the Lotus 2 at CES.

Google Phone Nexus One Specs Lodged with FCC

Engadget Dec. 14 scored new pictures and details of the Google Nexus One smartphone that will challenge Apple's iPhone as a new GSM device. Engadget said the device boasts microSD expansion, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, and covers quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE with UMTS/HSUPA on 850/1,700/1,900 frequencies. Only T-Mobile and AT&T propel GSM in the U.S., and T-Mobile looks to be the phone's sole supporter. Some are accusing Google of hypocrisy after Google Android engineering chief Andy Rubin said in October Google would not build hardware, implying that Google would not produce its own phone

Layers of the onion that is the Nexus One Google phone continue to get peeled away by industry insiders, as Engadget Dec. 14 scored new pictures and details of the smartphone that will challenge Apple's iPhone as a new GSM device.

Engadget said the device boasts microSD expansion, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, and covers quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE with UMTS/HSUPA on 850/1,700/1,900 frequencies.

A Google spokesperson declined to comment on any of the details, pointing instead to the company's blog post about how it gave its employees a phone, which seems to be the Nexus One, to test.

Only T-Mobile and AT&T, sole carrier of the iPhone, propel GSM in the United States, and AllThingsDigital said T-Mobile will indeed support the Nexus One. The device won't work on Verizon Wireless or Sprint.
